Barley is measured in tons in our area. A ton is 2,000 pounds and our average yield for malt barley is 2 tons per acres. Malt barely is planted in the spring. We use barley in our planting rotation to break up disease cycles. Malt barely is used in the process to make beer and Idaho is the second largest producer of barley in the United States.
When harvesting, the barley dust is finer than wheat dust and lodges into the pores on your skin making you itch constantly. To help with that problem we apply corn starch every morning to fill up the pores and that helps to get us through harvest without too much itching.
